Hull City have FC Twente boss Steve McClaren to thank to whipping new Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink into shape.

The Holland hit-man, who hit 38 goals in 80 outings for Celtic, revealed: "I have never felt so fit.

"After leaving Celtic, I trained with my physio, and after that Steve McClaren let me train with FC Twente.

"They had Champions League qualifiers, so the training was very intense. It meant I was still playing football and I now have a base to build from.

"I looked at other clubs and held talks, but I did not get the right feeling from them. When I came to Hull, I got the right feeling."
