Hull City AFC have lodged an application for a name change for next season and beyond.
Hull chairman Assem Allam has applied with the FA for the club to be named Hull Tigers, opposing the wishes of the fans.
The East Yorkshire club has been named Hull City Association Football Club since they were founded in 1904 but Allam feels a rename will help the Tigers recoup recent losses and grow the brand around the world.
However, if the name change is not accepted, Allam says he will step away from the KC Stadium.
"We reiterate our advice to all City fans to continue their fine support for our fantastic team while positively expressing a preference for our current name," he said in a statement.
"I'm a simple man. Do they want me to stay? If it's, 'No thank you', fine, in 24 hours the club is for sale, I do not put in one more pound and hopefully things happen quickly."
