Hull boss Silva grateful to Jakupovic for spotkick save

Hull City goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic kept the club's survival hopes alive with a late penalty save for their 0-0 draw at Southampton.

Hull pulled off a gritty goalless draw at Southampton, with Jakupovic palming away Dusan Tadic's late spot kick as the visitors held out for a potentially priceless point.

Hull's point, coupled with Sunderland's 1-0 home loss to Bournemouth, ensured Marco Silva's men edged closer to top-flight safety - and cemented the Black Cats' slip through the trap door.

Silva said afterwards: “The penalty save in the last minute was obviously a big moment in the game and if Southampton had scored from that we would have had a defeat that we didn't deserve.

“My staff said to me that they thought it was a penalty, but in the same situation at the other end of the field the referee didn't give anything.

“I don't want to talk only about what happened in the last minute of the game. All the way through we showed good organisation and played some very good football. We were very good in the first half and had a couple of chances to score. We hit the post with a free kick from Kamil and Niasse had a good chance as well.

“What we did in the first half is something that not many teams do to Southampton at their home. We controlled the game and kept some of their better players quiet. Our decisions in the final third weren't the best though, and we should have created more chances."
