Hull City boss Steve Bruce hailed the performance of Curtis Davies for their draw with Aston Villa.
The centre-back led by example as the Tigers stifled his former club to make it four games without defeat.
"Sometimes, centre-backs don't get the recognition they deserve," said Bruce. "Curtis got a horrible cut. It's a real nasty one.
"But he was a proper captain today. He was terrific. He's had a wonderful start to his career with us and he keeps putting in some terrific performances to help us get a clean sheet.
"He was by far the outstanding player on the pitch."
