Hull boss Brown slams 'home-grown' Football League ruling

Hull City boss Phil Brown has slammed the homegrown law being introduced to the Football League.

He told the Hull Daily Mail: "Word from the Football League is that all clubs are happy to welcome a new rule forcing the inclusion of four homegrown players in every 16-man squad.

"Although designed to encourage clubs' youth development, to me it is a ridiculous move.

"In essence, the new rules will see a governing body place restrictions on trade when it is none of their business.

"Somewhere down the line, that means they are putting a stranglehold on the quality of the product we can put out there. Who's to say that four homegrown players are better than four foreigners?"

The term "homegrown" applies to anyone that has been registered domestically at least three years before their 21st birthday.

"And as we have seen in the transfer market for many years, English players often come with inflated values simply because of their nationality.

"Do not get me wrong, I would love to see a Hull City team full of lads from East Yorkshire like Nick Barmby or Dean Windass, it is what every fan would like to see.

"But the only way that can be done properly is to get into the schools and get hold of promising youngsters from an early age."
