Hull City boss Phil Brown admits he almost quit the game before the Tigers job became available.
"I thought football had turned its back on me," he told the Sunday Mirror.
"After 27 years unbroken service in the game I then had eight months out. It is the worst time I have ever experienced.
"For me it would have been football's loss and horse racing's gain. I could have gone into racing. But whether it was that or a property business or whatever, I would have been 100 per cent into it.
"I served my time as an electrician and I still go back to my tools every so often. If it was necessary to put food on the table I'd go back to being an electrician. It's nice to have options."
