Hughes: Hart can be Man City's long-term No1

Manchester City boss Mark Hughes insists young goalkeeper Joe Hart can be their long-term No1.

Hart has just signed a new five-year contract and Hughes said: "Joe is capable of being our keeper for a long time.

"That is the thinking behind giving him a five-year deal.

"I have a lot of confidence in him.

"Yes, he is a young keeper but we know he will get better. As with all young players, there is more development to come.

"I am really pleased we have been able to secure his services for such a considerable length of time because this is a key time for him."

Snapped up by former boss and current England Under-21 chief Stuart Pearce, the former Shrewsbury star is gaining experience with each passing game.

Subjected to the usual aerial bombardment by Stoke yesterday, Hart commanded his penalty area in impressive style.

In addition, he made a series of key first-half saves at a time when Tony Pulis' side were optimistic of snatching something from the contest.

"Joe is growing as a player," observed Hughes.

"In experience terms he is still very young but he was able to do what we wanted not just by making good saves at key times but also in recognising when he could instigate attacks."
