QPR boss Mark Hughes was today confident of QPR's screening procedures for heart conditions in the wake of the on-field collapse that has left Fabrice Muamba fighting for his life, reports the Daily Mirror. Rangers boss Hughes admitted he had checked his club's policy following the cardiac arrest suffered by Bolton midfielder Muamba during Bolton's FA Cup tie at Tottenham on Saturday.
He said:
"I'm sure that's the case for many clubs. These things can happen irrespective of any screening processes that you have and that's the frightening thing about it."
He added: "Our thoughts, obviously, are with Fabrice and his family at this very worrying time for them. The events of the weekend were shocking for everybody and I think it resonates people in the football business because it just demonstrates the fragility of life.
"When it happens to a young man who is quite obviously a very fit individual, and he's struck down at match time in front of everyone, then it just becomes incomprehensible.
"Some of the guys know him. It was a little bit flat today, actually. I sensed that. It's understandable to a certain degree.
"Guys in the club that know Fabrice personally will obviously have him in their thoughts.
"It's really a terrible time for his family. We all hope and pray that he comes through this time.
"We just hope that there's a great outcome to what's been a really terrible weekend." "Every young player is screened, every player that comes into the club is screened as a matter of course. If there's anything more that can be done, I'm sure that will be implemented. But, at this moment in time, I don't think as a club we can do any more.
