Hughes challenges Blackburn's Bentley

Mark Hughes has told David Bentley that he has to keep producing the goods for Blackburn if he wants to cement his place in the England side.

Bentley made a positive impression on Fabio Capello in his first game in charge of the England side and he is on course to retain his place for the friendly with France.

The shadow of David Beckham still hovers over Bentley and Hughes feels the winger is at a stage in his career where he needs to be securing a starting spot for his country.

"David is at a stage of his career where he needs to play games rather than being a squad player, he needs to be first choice," Hughes said on Setanta Sports News.

"We feel he has got the ability to do that and he showed in his fist game that he has the capacity to be a seasoned international for years to come, but only time will tell if he can maintain that standard."
