Hughes: Barton will leave QPR but not for Marseille

QPR boss Mark Hughes has played down claims that Joey Barton is set to join Marseille.

Reports earlier today suggested that the suspended midfielder would head to the French club with Stephane Mbia heading the other way but that deal looks unlikely.

However, Hughes did say that Barton will head to another club whilst he serves his 12-match Football Association ban.

"Yes I think so," was Hughes' response when asked if Barton would go out on loan.

"I have had discussions on a number of occasions with Joey and the fact is he is not available for 12 games at the beginning of the season."

He added: "There has been interest shown by Marseille but there has been no offer made. There has been a few e-mails sent back and forth but nothing concrete yet."
