Hughes admits Southampton upset over Elneny red card scrapped

Southampton boss Mark Hughes admits they're upset with Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny having his red card overturned on appeal.

Elneny was sent off in the same late skirmish that saw Jack Stephens handed his marching orders, in Saints' Emirates Stadium defeat last weekend.

The Egypt midfielder's red card was rescinded by the Football Association (FA) however, leaving Southampton manager Hughes perplexed.

"We accepted our punishment, Jack (Stephens) has his reaction and was punished for that," said Hughes.

"But there were some other people involved who didn't seem to be treated in the same way in my view.

"Elneny raised his hands to a position by his (Cedric Soares') face, and by the letter of the law he should have gone.

"So to appeal that and it be rescinded surprised me. I think there needs to be continuity and consistency. The decision making seems to be at odds with what you'd expect."
