Houston Dynamo sign goalkeeper Newton

The Houston Dynamo have signed goalkeeper Evan Newton, the club's first-round pick in the 2011 MLS Supplemental Draft.

Per team and league policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Newton, 22, was selected with the seventh pick in the first round of the January 18 supplemental draft. He recently graduated from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va., with a degree in sports management, and finished as the Monarchs' all-time leader in saves and shutouts. Newton was a first team all-Colonial Athletic Association in 2010 after posting a 1.07 goals against average and is a former member of the U.S. U-17 national team.

Since joining training camp with the Dynamo, Newton has seen action in one scrimmage and is currently with the club on its preseason trip to Phoenix, Arizona.
