Houston Dynamo coach Kinnear: I could be Scottish star!

Houston Dynamo coach Dominic Kinnear admits he twice could've been lost to Scottish soccer.

Kinnear is preparing for today's MLS Cup final against LA Galaxy.

The ex-American international recalled to the Scottish Sun: "When I was in my teens I came over to Scotland and spent three months on trial with St Johnstone.

"Alex Totten was the coach and I travelled back and forward from my relations in Glasgow every day trying to win a contract.

"But it didn't work out and I went to the States and started my club career.

"But when my team in California folded I went back to the UK and went to Bolton on trial for a couple of weeks under Bruce Rioch. The club went to Scotland on pre-season and actually played friendlies at Ross County and St Johnstone.

"So I twice had attempts to make it in Britain that involved Perth and both times it didn't work out.

"I was pretty devastated both times but I went back to the USA, joined Fort Lauderdale Strikers and made my way up the US football pyramid.

"I'm a believer that things happen for a reason. I played for the US national team more than 50 times and I'm enjoying my coaching career.

"On Wednesday of this week I was sitting on my front porch at home just outside Houston in shorts and T-shirt which I doubt would've been possible in Perth!"
