AZ Alkmaar star Brett Holman is confident that the Australian national team will produce a much-improved performance against Germany next week. The Socceroos meet Die Mannschaft in Monchengladbach on Tuesday night (Wednesday am AEDT) and Holman insists that the 4-0 loss in the World Cup will go a long way to being avenged under new coach Holger Osieck.

"We have a lot of bad memories from Durban and that was the game that came back to haunt us at the World Cup," he told The World Game.

"The result was hard to take and it's not something you just forget about without a fair bit of reflection.

"But things have changed a lot since then. We're on a high after reaching the final of the Asian Cup and we're determined to get one back on them.

"We feel we have the capacity to do that and we're going into the game determined to show what we can do and maybe change of few of the German public's perceptions about us.

"It's important we go there and put on a performance and take another step forward after the Asian Cup."

And Holman, who has emerged as one of Australia's top players in the past 12 months or so, says that Osieck is planning to return to Germany and guide his players to a positive showing against one of the world's best teams.

"Holger will want to show what we can do as a coach as much as we do as players and going back to his homeland will mean a lot to him," he added.

"He'll be very motivated and he's greatly respected there after being assistant to Franz Beckenbauer's when Germany won the 1990 World Cup, so it's going to be a big occasion for him and us."
