Matt Holland is surprised Liverpool allowed Jonjo Shelvey to leave for Swansea City.

Holland, who played with Shelvey during his early career at Charlton, believes his skill and attitude will make him an England regular in the not too distant future.

"I was surprised Liverpool allowed him to go," Holland told talkSPORT.

"I know they got good money for him and perhaps they didn't want to hamper his progress, because he needs to be playing regularly.

"I think he's a top class player and I think with that character and the attributes he's got he can go to the very top.

"I wouldn't surprise me to see him playing for the full national team in the not too distant future, I think he's that good."
