Holland reveals Chelsea crunch meeting sparked new form

Chelsea assistant coach Steve Holland has revealed how a training ground crunch meeting has sorted their defensive problems this season.

Meetings were held following the 2-1 defeat at Sunderland, where the hosts capitalised on poor defending to net a last-minute equaliser before winning the Capital One Cup quarter-final tie in extra time.

Holland told Chelsea TV: "After we lost at Sunderland it was time to regroup.

"We had several conversations, in small groups and big groups. We were disappointed in the manner we went out.

"We showed them some clips on one or two mistakes we were making and the goals we were giving away.

"We highlighted the importance of eradicating [those errors] during this period if we're going to be serious title contenders.

"The players have responded really well in the last few games, starting with Arsenal [0-0], which was a game we could have won and then we had three good wins over Christmas.

"In open play there have been no goals conceded in four League games and that is the form of champions because you can't always win 3-0 playing spectacularly.

"Sometimes when games come thick and fast you have to grind some matches out. That's very difficult to do if you're conceding two-three goals every game."
