Louis van Gaal is of the belief that the Scotland national team will soon discover that Mario Mandzukic is a quality striker.

The Bayern Munich man and his Croatia teammates are preparing for Friday’s World Cup qualifier against the Scots in Zagreb and his former boss van Gaal, who is the current manager of Holland, is tipping him to star.

“Scotland are about to discover Mario Mandzukic is a very good player,” said former Bayern boss van Gaal.

“What makes him special is not only is he a top striker, but he also does a terrific amount of work in defence. That is what I like about him.

“He is the ultimate team player who cares about the collective success and not just about himself.

“Scotland need to be careful. He has a goal threat from every area. He will get goals from everywhere.

“Mandzukic can be lethal and Gordon Strachan will, I’m sure, be telling his players to give him special attention. Mandzukic has a real quality at both ends of the pitch and if you go to sleep then he will punish Scotland.

“The Scotland players will need to be very awake or else they will discover a player who does not need an invitation to show just how clinical he is.

“He has the skills to hurt any team, but he does not do it alone.

“Croatia will use him in the same way Bayern Munich do. It will allow him the freedom to try and cause damage, but he will not do it all himself. It will be done as a team.”
