England coach Roy Hodgson is ready to hand Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand a recall this summer.

The People says he aims to speak to the Manchester United defender about his medical programme and determine his availability for friendly matches against Republic of Ireland and Brazil in early summer. Ferdinand controversially pulled out of World Cup qualifying matches against San Marino and Montenegro in March over fitness concerns.

And Hodgson was criticised for not sounding out the centre-half before recalling him to the squad.

This time around the England boss intends to make sure he is aware of every detail of Ferdinand's situation before naming his squad.
