Manchester United defender Phil Jones has been told to make centre-half his long-term position.
Jones has been told by Roy Hodgson his best chance of a long England career is at centre-back.
Hodgson said: "Jones falls into a category that develops at a club like Manchester United, where there are so many top players.
"I haven't worked enough with him to be able to say definitively what I think - but my impression is that he is a centre-half.
"Quite frankly, his chances of establishing himself in the England team are probably as great, if not greater, at centre-back than at full-back. At full-back on both sides we have pretty stiff competition."
