Hodgson tells England fans: We can win World Cup!

England coach Roy Hodgson has told fans in Miami they're capable of winning the World Cup. Hodgson became the first England manager to take part in a question and answer session with supporters on the eve of a tournament.

England face a tough Group D draw against Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica but Hodgson said: "What makes me think we can win it is because it is a knockout competition. After that period of group games, you go to knockout football.

"If we look at previous tournaments it is very easy to name teams that, at the start of the tournament, weren't given a chance. I'll give you the first example - [Euro] 1992, Denmark didn't even qualify, their best player Michael Laudrup didn't want to play, he was on holiday and felt it was too late to get fit, they rounded people up from the beaches and had four days of training before their first game.

"They beat Holland on the way to the final and Germany in the final to become European champions. Anyone who comes into this tournament believing we don't have a chance has got to be barking up the wrong tree. Certainly if you are England and you think you don't have a chance, you are barking up the wrong tree. It might be a bit harder for some of these teams ranked 32, 31 and 30 but we are not ranked as low as that.

"I don't know if we can win it. All I know is that we can work towards it, that the process of winning it is being done as perfectly as you can do it."
