Hodgson offers apology after throwing armband to tribute West Brom legend

West Bromwich Albion manager Roy Hodgson has apologised for throwing his armband to the ground during yesterday's 3-1 home loss to Newcastle United.

The Baggies were honouring club legend Ray Barlow, who passed away earlier this month aged 85, by wearing a symbol of their appreciation for the services he gave the club.

As West Brom fell three goals behind within 33 minutes to the Toon, Hodgson threw the armband down in disgust but has since offered his apology to Barlow and his family, insisting it meant no disrespect.

"It is something I did without thinking out of pure frustration at conceding the third goal," Hodgson said.

"I meant no disrespect by it to such a great player, nor his family, and offer my sincere apologies if it has caused offence."

Barlow, who was the inspiration for Sir Bobby Moore, made over 480 appearances for the Baggies between 1944 and 1960.
