Hodgson keen for hype to ease around Everton ace Barkley

England coach Roy Hodgson is eager to ease the hype around Everton midfielder Ross Barkley.

The 21-year-old Everton midfield star turned in a dazzling man-of-the-match display against Estonia on Friday.

“Ross is maturing and getting better all the time but I am not a fan of hype," said Hodgson.

“Obviously, as a coach, I have seen something special in him but I don't like players to get carried away, I like them to keep their feet on the ground.

“And to be fair to Ross he has never shown signs of getting carried away. He is a very serious professional who wants to work at his game.

“Football at the highest level is about decision-making.

“What you want your talented players, like Ross and Raheem Sterling, to do, is to choose the right moments to put the ball at risk and try things.

“The key is that when the chance comes along, you take it, so people say good things about you. That's what Ross has done."
