England coach Roy Hodgson has heaped praise on Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick.

Hodgson was forthright over the selection of Carrick, back in the fold after revising his intention to shun international football when Fabio Capello was in charge.

"Carrick is absolutely in contention," said Hodgson.

"He's done very well at club level when he hasn't been an England regular, which led him, we believe, to lose interest in playing for the country.

"He adds enormously to the competition for places for Steven and Frank because he is another all-round midfield player."
