Hodgson eager to promote alternate goalscorers in England squad

England manager Roy Hodgson believes his squad needs more players who can score vital goals in tight matches in international tournaments.

According to Hodgson, one of his team's shortcomings has been the lack of players who can settle crunch games with a touch of brilliance.

Hodgson has pleaded for the rest of his Three Lions squad, particularly the likes of Raheem Sterling, Theo Walcott and Harry Kane, to step up and give captain Wayne Rooney some scoring assistance.

"If you go back over the recent past, it could be an accusation against us that there have not been enough players who were able to step up and score the goals when needed," Hodgson said.

"We've got to make sure we find and encourage these players. We have a year and I intend to give them every opportunity to show they can do it. That's all I can do and, after that, they have to get on the field and repay that trust by doing it."
