Glenn Hoddle insists he made the right call signing Bobby Zamora while in charge of Tottenham.
Fulham striker Zamora is now being tipped for a late World Cup call by England after a superb run of recent form.
Former England coach Hoddle told the Daily Mail: "Bobby was a hard-working player, a good finisher, he had really good movement off the ball, way above the standard he was playing at, and with better players around him I felt he could go on and do very well."
But Hoddle left three months later and Zamora found himself down the pecking order under caretaker boss David Pleat.
Hoddle said: "Bobby needed time but I never got that time to work with him. I was looking forward to getting him through that first six months but, unfortunately, when I left David Pleat took over and didn't really play him. Bobby needed to be nursed through that early period, but he needed to get away in the end."
