Chelsea legend Glenn Hoddle says his old club need to spend big on a world class name this summer. Hoddle insists Chelsea are not at the elite level of Champions League clubs.

He wrote in the Mail on Sunday: "Which brings us to the key point: how can Premier League clubs go about recruiting the best players in the world? Because that's what Chelsea need to do if they are to take on Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern in the short term.

"If Chelsea set their sights on the Champions League, it is one of the top five players in the world who could make the difference, such as Bale. And they may need to sign one of the world's top 10, such as Paul Pogba.

"That's the leap they need to make. Where Chelsea have Hazard, Barcelona have Messi, Suarez and Neymar; Real have Ronaldo, Bale and Benzema; Bayern have Muller, Robben and Ribery. If one fails, the others come to the rescue. That's where Chelsea can improve."
