Hoddle: Big Sam must stick with Man City keeper Hart

Tottenham legend Glenn Hoddle has urged Sam Allardyce to stick with Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart for England.

Hoddle wrote for the Daily Mail: "If a player you rate has not been in regular action due to injury or other circumstances like Joe Hart, do you select him or not?

"I recall a similar case from my own career regarding Darren Anderton.

"He had been out of the Tottenham side for four months before returning just before the end of 1997-98 season and I had a squad to pick for the World Cup.

"After careful consideration I went with him. We worked him hard before the squad was announced and I was fortunate that he recovered his fitness quickly because I saw him as a key player.

"I went into the tournament with the idea of playing 3-5-2 with wing backs and David Beckham had done the job while Darren was out. I preferred Darren to be one of the three in midfield so, despite his relative lack of games in the second half of that season, he was selected for the squad. He started every game and performed well, even scoring a crucial goal against Colombia.

"The situation is slightly different with Hart who has been dropped, but my instinct is the same in that I feel we should not allow club circumstances to cost England an important player."
