Hillsborough victims inspired us - Liverpool's Rodgers

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers admits he was motivated by the 25th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster.

Tuesday marks 25 years since 96 Liverpool fans lost their lives during a FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest at Sheffield's Hillsborough Stadium which prompted Rodgers to speak emotionally of the tragedy.

The Northern Irishman led the Reds to an inspiring 3-2 victory over title rivals Manchester City, to remain clear at the top of the table, and felt there were extra players on the pitch such was the atmosphere at Anfield throughout the contest.

"It was a wonderful atmosphere. I'm sure it sounded loud on TV, but down on pitch-side it was incredible," he told Sky Sports.

"There is always an emotive side around this time, people were wondering if that would affect us. But we live with that every day.

"The families and the victims of Hillsborough are with us every day, in our thoughts. It was an inspiration for us, rather than something that would hold us back."
