High expectations gives de Guzman the will to succeed at Toronto FC

Toronto FC midfielder Julian de Guzman says a mixture of high expectations, injury troubles and management changes has him extremely motivated to do well with the club.

The 30-year old Canada international has not performed as he, and plenty of fans, would have hoped since his high-profile move from Deportivo la Coruna in 2009 but he is keen to put that right ahead of the 2012 MLS season.

"It has definitely been a tough journey," de Guzman told lfpress.com.

"Unfortunately, it has taken some time to find a good feeling.

"It has been a learning experience. It's your home fans and your hometown coming at you. It is something as a professional you have to absorb.

"But at the same time it does give me that drive.

"It's probably the most important moment of my contract," he added. "It's important for myself to continue to give it my best … I'll just see how I'll be rewarded at the end.

"My heart and pride will always be with TFC and every moment I continue to treat it as if it was my last.

"Finally I feel like I'm in a professional environment like I imagined myself being in."
