Hibernian's Heffernan in disbelief at sudden transfer from Kilmarnock

Hibernian new boy Paul Heffernan admits he was shocked when he was sent from Kilmarnock on a free transfer.

The 31-year old striker had two impressive seasons with Killie after joining from Sheffield Wednesday in the summer of 2011 but was transferred to Hibs on Friday and he suggests it was a little out of the blue.

"(Kilmarnock chairman) Michael Johnston was happy to let me go for free and (Hibs manager) Pat Fenlon was willing to take me," he said.

"I was a bit surprised. I still had a year left on my contract. But obviously the new manager (Allan Johnston) has come in and maybe he wants to bring in his own sort of players.

"I don't know what their reasoning was. I just know they were willing to let me go for free. I suppose nothing should surprise you when a new manager comes in."

Heffernan made his debut for Hibs in their 0-0 draw with Ross County on Saturday, coming on as an 82nd minute sub, just a week after playing against the Edinburgh club for Kilmarnock.
