Hibernian boss sympathises with Scottish refs

Hibernian boss Colin Calderwood has expressed sympathy for the "solidarity" shown by striking officials. Hibs' match with St Johnstone at Easter Road on Saturday will go ahead as planned after the Scottish Football Association announced foreign officials will be drafted in to replace their striking Scottish counterparts.

Calderwood believes officials are right to express their grievances in such a way, but called for a long-term resolution to the saga.

The Hibs boss said: "What else can they do? I would imagine they've got to go through the powerbrokers of football and set down what they think is right and wrong.

"I think it's quite a good thing that they have all come together and shown solidarity.

"It really does bring it into focus that they are required come the weekend."

Calderwood is pleased the match with Saints will go ahead as scheduled.

He added: "It would be wrong not to have the games. A solution has been found, it's quite easily found, but there's obviously a cost and an expense to that which you wouldn't want to have as an ongoing thing.

"We've got to have some progress from what's happening."

The SFA offered to bring in a range of proposals to appease referees including banning all club officials from commenting on referees before and immediately after matches.

"There has got to be a certain amount of control and legislation about what people do say about referees," he added.

"There's always been a question about a referee's performance after every game that I've been involved in so far.

"We're answering questions put to us. I think it's a talking point that should be aired and viewed - criticism is part and parcel of being in the football game.

"Their complaint is the actions by the people involved - I think that can be addressed.

"We need referees and they administer the laws of the game as best they can - we all better adhere to them."
