Thierry Henry scored his first goal since April 28 when he struck a wonderful left-footed volley to give New York Red Bull a 1-0 victory over Chicago Fire on Wednesday.
The French striker controlled a rightwing cross from Sebastien Le Toux with his chest on the left side of the area before hitting a sweet effort over off the far post and into the back of the net.
The goal sent the Red Bull Arena crowd into a frenzy and allowed the Red Bulls within a point of Eastern conference leaders Sporting Kansas City with Henry stating he simply had to do something to give his side a chance of gaining all three points on a very hot day.
"It's wasn't easy, as you can imagine," Henry said.
"Somehow we had to find a way to win the game, especially when you play a conference game.
"Chicago were a point behind us; (now) it's four points. It wasn't the best game ever, but it's one you go back home and be happy."
He added: "I went for goal, and the ball went in the back of the net. Sometimes they go in, sometimes they don't; but I'm never scared to try anything. That's me.
"I needed to do something. I was pretty useless because of injuries, obviously not delivering. So I'm happy to do something today."
