Henderson backed to replace Gerrard as Liverpool skipper

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has given his backing to Jordan Henderson to become the clubs next captain.

The 24-year old Reds vice-captain has come on in leaps and bounds over the past few seasons and Rodgers is confident he has what it takes to succeed cub legend Steven Gerrard who will depart Anfield for MLS club LA Galaxy in the summer.

"I've obviously made him a vice-captain of the club and he has really grown, not just as a footballer but as a young lad," said Rodgers after Henderson took the captain's armband in today's 1-0 win over Sunderland when Gerrard was subbed off at half-time with a hamstring injury.

"You saw his quality today - his leadership and his power. He is a fantastic young man and that was the reason for giving him it.

"When Steven isn't on the field he is a real leader for us and there is no question he can go on and become captain at the club."
