Hartson says Man Utd striker Rooney showed thuggish behaviour in McCarthy clash

Celtic legend John Hartson says Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney deserved suspension for his clash with Wigan Athletic's James McCarthy.

Hartson stands by his comments over the controversy.

"Alex Ferguson knows Wayne Rooney smashed James McCarthy on the back of the head - unjustifiable. Rooney could have broken the boy's jaw, it was thuggish," Hartson told the Daily Mail.

"Now if he wants to defend his player, that ' s up to him. For Mike Phelan and the referee to say, 'It's a coming together' is embarrassing.

"I love Wayne Rooney but he should have been done for that - fined, suspended, whatever."
