Joe Hart knows he has to be on the top of his game if he is to retain his place in Manchester City's first XI. The England international won the battle of the Blues' goalkeepers this summer as Roberto Mancini handed him a starting berth for City's Premier League opener at Tottenham.
Hart is now hoping that he can tie down the role on a permanent basis and help City fulfil their undoubted potential.
He knows he cannot afford to let standards slip if he is to achieve that target, as Shay Given is still breathing down his neck.
"It's a difficult situation but I'm enjoying it at the moment," said the 23-year-old shot-stopper.
"We speak about it, but there's only so much we can comment on.
"I'm taking everything step-by-step and trying to improve my game. I have to do that because if I don't, I know Shay will take it away from me.
"I'm a confident kind of person, but not in a cocky way. You have to believe in yourself and enjoy what you do and it's nice to be playing.
"Everyone wants to be in the side because City are an exciting prospect at the moment. We've had big games at Spurs and in Romania and now we have another big game coming up against Liverpool.
"It's the first home game of the new Premier League season and it should be an exciting night."
