For Bournemouth fans, one thing is for sure with new signing Harry Arter - the young Irishman won't be afraid of hard work.

Following his summer arrival from Woking, the midfielder accepts he faces a battle to establish himself with the Cherries - and won't shy away from it.

The 20 year-old has successfully rebuilt his career after a serious Achilles injury threatened his future. Arter ruptured his Achilles a day after making his debut with Charlton - and then was cut loose by the Addicks.

However, a season in the Conference with Woking was enough to convince Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe to bring Arter to the League One club.

"It feels good and I'm happy to be back in the league," Arter told tribalfootball.com. "Obviously it was something I needed to do at the time to prove my fitness after my injuries to show people I'm still the same player I was but just with more experience now.

"Firstly I need to establish myself in the starting eleven. I know I'm going to have to work hard for that as there are a lot of good players here, but it is a challenge I am really excited about.

"Coming from non-league it was important to hit the ground running. The work rate both on and off the pitch at this level is in my opinion paramount to being successful and is something I take very seriously.

"I think with this mentality I feel I'm fitter than ever ... anything can be achieved."

Arter enjoyed an outstanding preseason with the Cherries, but has been in-and-out of Howe's first team in the opening weeks of the season.

The midfielder endured a difficult debut in the opening day defeat to Charlton, but has no problem playing the long game at Dean Court as he waits for his next chance. Arter hasn't been banging on Howe's door and is happy to take on board any advice the manager offers.

"He hasn't said anything specifically, but with Bournemouth gaining promotion and there being a few new faces I think the preseason was just a form of bonding.

"However, there are certain areas he has highlighted I need to improve on and I'm looking forward to improving myself under his guidance."

Arter knows there is an international carrot in front of him if he can start producing consistently for Bournemouth this season. The midfielder was regarded at Charlton as one of the club's best prospects and was capped by the Republic of Ireland at U19 level.

Last season he was presented with an international dilemma as such was his form with Woking that England came knocking!

"Last season it was mentioned to me about playing for England C," revealed Arter. "But for me I'm still an Ireland player. No one's been in touch just yet, but I'm hopeful that if I have a good season I'll be back in with a shout to play for my country."

The opening day defeat to Charlton aside, Bournemouth have kicked off the season impressively and Arter says there's great ambition inside Howe's squad.

"I'm not really sure what the fans are expecting this season, but from within the squad we have high expectations because we are all confident in the team's ability," said Arter.

And given the way he has fought back from serious injury, a stumble at the start of his Cherries career is no major hurdle for Arter to overcome.
