Hargreaves: Man Utd crazy to sell Rooney to Chelsea

Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves says his old club would be "crazy" to sell Wayne Rooney to Chelsea. While he can empathise with Rooney, Hargreaves believes it would be a mistake for David Moyes to let him join up with Jose Mourinho at Stamford Bridge.

"If I was United I wouldn't sell him - especially not to Chelsea," he told the Manchester Evening News. "But when these things gather momentum sometimes they are difficult to stop. The question is, 'Do you want to keep someone who is probably not at his happiest?'

"I think he's been a great servant to United. He's still one of the top five players in the Premier League, so wherever goes, he makes them instantly better.

"I wouldn't sell to Chelsea. I think it would be crazy.

"But if he's made his mind up and they are offering a lot of money. You've seen in the past that United have sold players they probably never really wanted to sell.

"Cristiano Ronaldo had a price and he went. He was as influential as anybody in football. People say money is not this or that, but in the end it does play a pretty big part.

"I can understand why United wouldn't sell to Chelsea. But you could argue if you are a player and you didn't play for United, where would you want to go?

"You'd only want to go to City or Chelsea if you take away the allegiances.

"If he goes to Chelsea, they are definitely favourites to win the league so I think you can understand it from Wayne's point of view, but time will tell."
