Hamburg are keen to have Real Betis midfielder Rafael van der Vaart involved with the club.
Van der Vaart saw HSV in action on the weekend.
HSV president Karl Gernandt said: "Playing here? Such a time is over ... But an ambassador, why not?
"Rafael is a great example for young people, he left here big time, very emotional, and I know that he is committed to the club."
