Hamann: It wouldn't surprise me if Man Utd asked Ferguson...

Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann has gone on to state that it would not surprise him if Manchester United asked Sir Alex Ferguson to return as manager.

Ever since the retirement of Ferguson, United have been going through a very lean spell and despite appointing previously successful managers such as David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho since the departure of the legendary Scotsman, the Red Devils look a shadow of the team that dominated English football over the last two decades.

Current manager Mourinho is already finding himself under huge pressure following a poor start to the current campaign and if things turn from bad to worse, ex-Liverpool and Manchester City midfielder Hamann believes that United may well request Ferguson to return to the hotseat at Old Trafford.

Hamann told TalkSPORT: "They need to change the mentality of the players and the mood in the whole club because there is a negativity about the club and there has been since Fergie left.

"Moyes got about seven, eight months before he had to go and the choice the club has to make is: where are we going to go from here?

"It was always a big, big ask to follow in Sir Alex Ferguson's footsteps. They gave Moyes a chance, and I think he deserved a shot at the job, but that didn't work out. Then they went for Van Gaal, a hugely successful manager in the past, and then Mourinho; and that hasn't worked out.

"It depends when you make the change. I don't agree that he [Mourinho] has got to be given two or three years. If you are ten points or six points behind the Champions League places by Christmas, I am sure with all the sponsorships they have got that missing out on the Champions League for another season will be a huge, huge blow because all these sponsors won't pay the amount of money they are guaranteed if they do play in the Champions League.

"Ed Woodward and maybe the Glazers, they will be in constant contact with Fergie, who is still going to the games, and [I wonder] whether they would have put it to him that: 'if things get worse, would you be able or would you think about coming back for a few months?' Because if they were to make a change at some stage this season, who would they go for? They have had two of the most successful managers in the last 15 years and all the top managers are now gone.

"I wouldn't be surprised if the question will be asked. Whether Fergie would do it, I'm not sure. But you have to try your upmost to get back in the Champions League and you have to say to Fergie: 'Listen, have what you want but come back for six months'. Who else are they going to go for?"
