Asamoah Gyan says Sunderland boss Steve Bruce was right not to rush his Premier League introduction.
Gyan struck his fifth of the season in the draw with Tottenham.
He said: "My family are settled now. After the World Cup, everything was a bit difficult for me in my preparations for the season.
"My fitness wasn't good and I had to be given some time. The coach was very intelligent and he gave me some time to settle in here.
"I have to thank him for taking the pressure off me and using me at the right time. I'm doing the right things now."
