Gyan delighted with derby strike for Sunderland

Asamoah Gyan was delighted with his equaliser for Sunderland in their derby draw against Newcastle United.

While Gyan admitted he got lucky in turning the ball over the line, he also revealed he know instinctively where to be when the chance came.

He revealed to safc.com: "When Bardsley had the shot all I wanted to do was follow up. That is what I do; I am a striker.

"I wanted to get the ball with my head but it was going too fast for me so I had to use my chest. It was a bit lucky, but it counts."

And Gyan, who has now scored eight goals in 21 appearances for Sunderland, was delighted to grab a point from a "tough" derby-day encounter.

"I felt great, you saw this in the way I reacted after the goal," he said. "We could not afford to lose this game.

"The atmosphere was amazing. The supporters tried, they boosted our confidence and in the end we did it."
