Gutted Southampton star van Dijk: ‘We can’t let that happen’

Virgil van Dijk was in a downhearted mood after Southampton failed in the Europa League on Thursday night.

The Saints drew 1-1 with Israeli minnows Hapoel Be'er Sheva at St Mary's which drew to a close their European campaign for season 2016/17.

The south coast club required a win or a scoreless draw to advance to the Round 32 but disaster struck in the 78th minute when Oriol Romeu gave away the ball in defence which lead to Maor Buzaglo's well-placed effort to give the visitors the lead.

After the match, van Dijk, who scored his side's equaliser, spoke of the error which set up a frustrating night for the Saints.

"We're so disappointed, especially the way we conceded the goal," he told Southamptonfc.com.

"We can't let that happen, especially at this level. We are obviously very frustrated and it's difficult to put into words at the moment.

"It's close to our box and we try to play out, and we know they press. They go and they press a lot, and we give it away too easy and obviously we're wide open and it's only one ball through and they score. We can't let that happen and we need to look at that and improve a lot.

"We wanted to win, obviously, because if you play for a 0-0 you are going the wrong way, but we had the opportunities in the first half. We weren't clinical enough, so I'm just very disappointed at the moment.

"We knew it was going to be a tough game. We played them away and we had a tough game there. We were prepared and we were ready for it, but it's about scoring that goal. Obviously, we couldn't keep the clean sheet. We need to look at it and bounce back on Sunday, which is going to be a massive game."
