Guthrie has Reading future despite refusal to travel says McDermott

Reading manager Brian McDermott insists Danny Guthrie is still a required member of his squad despite his recent behaviour.

The former Newcastle United midfielder refused to travel with the Royals for their Tuesday night clash with Sunderland for which he has since been fined two weeks' wages.

Guthrie issued an apology, explaining that his 'head wasn't right', and now McDermott has made it clear that no further action will be taken as he looks forward following a regrettable incident.

"Let's see where we are in a couple of days' time and go from there," he said.

"I need to have a conversation with him and be fair to him. I don't think anything in football is untenable, there's always a way back.

"The way back for him is to train to the best of his ability, get himself in the squad, play well and win games. Then the fans can forgive an awful lot.

"I'm always one to see the positives, but I can understand the fans' frustration in this. I have got to speak to him. We haven't had a conversation yet."
