Grosso honoured to wear Scirea's No6 at Juventus

Former Lyon fullback Fabio Grosso says he's honoured to be wearing the No6 at Juventus on the 20th anniversary of Gaetano Scirea's death.

"To wear the No 6 of Juventus will be a great honour and a privilege," said Grosso.

"Carrying the number that represented Scirea, a legend of football and a man who to this day still represents an example for all players, helps make me feel part of a long and glorious history.

"I hope to deserve the faith the club has put in me and to repay the fans and teammates for the warm welcome."

1982 World Cup winner Scirea died in a car crash in Poland on September 3 1989 when he was on a scouting mission for Juve.

"I am certain Fabio will be able to wear that jersey with pride, honouring it with the hard work and fair play that always represented my husband," said widow Mariella Scirea.

"It is wonderful to see that 20 years later a World Cup winner is wearing the No 6 at Juventus and above all that he knows what significance it holds for all the fans."

Following his death, the 'end' of the stadium where Juve supporters gather was renamed Curva Scirea.
