Atletico Madrid attacker Antoine Griezmann struck twice in victory at Champions League opponents Galatasaray.

The French forward silenced the crowd at the Turk Telecom Arena when he put the Spaniards ahead in the 18th minute and he doubled their lead seven minutes later.

The hosts had three shots on goal throughout their Group C opening encounter and could not beat Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak on the night.

Atletico coach Diego Simeone had demanded a strong start to the competition after his team fell 3-2 at Olympiacos in last season's group opener.

Simeone said: "The team put in a good first half.

"We were able to catch Galatasaray by surprise by fielding Griezmann, Vietto and Jackson in attack but what pleased me the most was the our midfielders contained Galatasaray. Our first 20 minutes were very good, grabbing a couple of early goals allowed us to confront the rest of the game relatively relaxed."
