Sir Philip Green is again being linked with a takeover at Tottenham.

The Daily Mail says that even if Britain's seventh-richest man is not, as he always insists, interested in owning a football club, the billionaire has some wealthy, Spurs-supporting friends and acquaintances who might be, probably in a super-consortium.

Chief among them is Richard Caring, his close pal and long-term business partner in the clothing business, who is worth about £450 million and owns The Ivy and Le Caprice restaurants, Annabel's nightclub, Wentworth Golf Club and other high-profile businesses.

Almost as thick with Green is former Watford director Mike Sherwood (estimated wealth: £225m), co-chief executive of Goldman Sachs in Europe and already a Tottenham shareholder.

Then there are the billionaire property investors, Robert and Vincent Tchenguiz, who, along with Sherwood, were on board Green's Gulfstream V jet when he flew back from the 2006 Champions League Final cursing the £100,000 he had lost backing Arsenal to beat Barcelona.

Green had a role in the transfers of Rio Ferdinand, Wayne Rooney and Louis Saha to Manchester United, but his first love is Tottenham, where he once helped Terry Venables raise money to buy into the club.
