Former Wolves fullback Michael Gray feels the club's priorities were all wrong.
Gray believes that if the club's owners had invested more money in players, rather than revamping Molineux, then they could have avoided relegation.
"I think one of the big stumbling blocks was building a new stand," Gray told the Sunday Mercury. "I think that Mick McCarthy needed that money to strengthen the squad. That was the big thing.
"I spoke to Mick a couple of times and he certainly never lost the dressing room.
"I know he still keeps in touch with a lot of the players now and rightly so, because he's known a lot of them for a long time."
