Gonzalez expecting tough second season with LA Galaxy

LA Galaxy youngster Omar Gonzalez knows he is in for a tough second MLS season.

The 21-year old defender was named the competition’s Rookie of the Year in 2009 but understands that there is plenty of hard work ahead of him if he is to remain at the soaring heights that saw him set club records for games played, games started and minutes played in his debut season.

"If (coach) Bruce (Arena) is tougher, that's fine with me," Gonzalez said. "He's only trying to being out the best in me, and that's what I appreciate about Bruce. He's always trying to help me do my best.

"If he is tough, I'm definitely not going to get mad at the guy for doing that."

And become tough is what Arena plans to do as he believes Gonzalez can step up even further and develop into a top class player.

“He has to be more consistent," Arena said. "He's got to assume a little bit more of a leadership role in the field and be responsible for not only putting out some fires but solving some problems. He's now a little more experienced and should be a little more decisive and confident with his abilities on the field.

"I think he did great last year, but I think he would also tell you there were a few moments where maybe could have been a little bit better. But that's all part of it when you make decisions to go with young players. You expect some mistakes along the way and you have to deal with that. But overall, I think his rookie year was excellent."
