Gold Coast United's Smeltz planning to hit back against old club tonight

Shane Smeltz wants to atone Gold Coast United's horror 6-0 loss to Wellington Phoenix at Westpac Stadium last season.

Tonight, United face the New Zealand club at the same venue and Smeltz, a former Phoenix star, is looking to put a few things right.

"We need to atone and put quite a few things right," Smeltz said. "It was just one of those days the last time we were there.

"A few things went wrong and they just punished us."

The New Zealand international has not scored for the Gold Coast since January 9 against Adelaide United but feels no extra pressure heading into the Phoenix clash.

"It's no problem at all," said Smeltz. "I'm 28 now, I've been through plenty of (lean spells).

"As time goes on you learn to deal with it a lot better and how to pick yourself up and get on with it.

"You look forward to the next game and try and put that right."
