Gold Coast United ready for A-League action

The hype is over, let the game begin. That was the message from Gold Coast United captain Jason Culina today as his side went through their last training session before tomorrow's eagerly awaited season opener against Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium.

After weeks of media attention, Culina says the United squad are ready for their derby battle and have been unconcerned about the colour and controversy that has surrounded the fixture.

"The players don't take too much notice of the media hype; we just focus on our jobs," Culina said.

"Tomorrow's game has three points up for grabs and it will be a big test for us, but I'm very confident we are up to it.

"We've been working hard for quite a while now and finally the day has come. It's a big game; everyone has been talking about it and we're ready for the challenge.

"The rise in tempo at training has been very visible lately and we are looking to transfer that into the game on Saturday.

"It's been a long pre-season and the boys are itching to get started with the real action. I'm confident in our players and they will be lifted by the occasion."

After returning from a successful stint in Europe to head the Hyundai A-League's A-list of stars, the United skipper added that he is ready for the task of leading his side into their first ever campaign.

"When I came back from Europe I was ready for the extra responsibility and to be captain of this team is fantastic.

"I feel confident in my role as a leader of this team because of the quality of the players around me. We've a great bunch of players here who are always working hard and always prepared to do that little bit extra," he said.

Following a week of almost unprecedented media attention, Head Coach, Miron Bleiberg, said he was delighted that the focus is now on the football match itself, promising an attack-minded approach on the big night.

"The circus is over and we are all looking forward to the game. The media hype has added more salt and pepper to the dish, but ultimately it's about the game now," Bleiberg said.

He added: "We won't be going to hit the Roar on the break or to close down the game. We will play open football and hopefully they will do the same which allow players like Jason Culina and Charlie Miller to express themselves and entertain the crowd."
